sdn: february

this past wednesday night, craig came home to the front door plastered with scattered hearts, and an envelope. he came in and asked if i knew anything about it, i tried to play it off like i didn't. he believed me for a split second then my inability to lie was shown quickly with a grin on my face. he was intrigued and i was excited to see his reaction. he opened the envelope and found inside an invitation to prom. yes, you read that right. prom.

i asked what he thought, and he asked if we were going to a real prom. i told him he'd have to wait and find out. letting him think for several days that we may be headed to a real high school prom. haha oh my, it makes me giggle to think about the thoughts that could be going through his head about that. needless to say, we did not crash a high school prom. i created a prom at home, just for us. (free customizable invite found here.)

the invite stated we would have "outfit coordination" at 3:30pm. so 3:30 saturday, i told craig we were responsible for each other's outfits. i got to style him and he got to style me, and we had to wear whatever the other person picked out for us. we were able to use whatever we could find at home, plus any items from one particular store. (which i already knew where we'd be going.) craig scoped out my closet and then we were off to the store....

the christian mission thrift store in downtown enterprise. we set a $10 budget per person. we searched for something a little more on the silly side of things. we were having fun with the possibilities. and i will thank craig publicly for not choosing the red dress, he scored some major points for that one!

the complete ensembles actually turned out to not look too silly like we were thinking they would. in fact, they ended up fitting the mood/theme of the evening quite well. our theme was "my heart will go on"... a true classic. the reason i chose this theme is the reason these outfits seem to work... in 1999 i wrote in my journal "i love craig harnois". and so, i searched some popular prom songs from back in the day. hence, "my heart will go on", lots and lots of hearts, and 90s ensembles.

of course, we had to take a few before dinner shots. the classic staircase photos were a must. then i pinned craig with his boutonniere. (i knew we would be spending a little more on dinner so i tried my best to decorate and make all the extras from things we already had at home in order to be a little more budget friendly! and so it was, a paper boutonniere was born!)

for dinner, we headed to the rawls. it is a classic old building. serving as a restaurant/bar/hotel. it was a delicious dinner and a very fun experience. highly recommend to any fellow alabamians, or anyone who happens to visit alabama. we did get quite a few stares. at one point craig said he would wave at them to see if that'd stop them from staring. we just giggled about it... we were there to have a good time and they were probably either curious or jealous. or maybe they were just admiring our 90s outfits!

after dinner we were off to the dance! this was the first craig had seen of any of the decorations and he was pretty impressed. it may have looked a bit like someone barfed pink and hearts all over our living room, but that's sort of what i was going for. so, i think we're good. ya know, prom decor is always a little cheesy and over the top!

our tunes for the evening came from the 1999 grammy nominee cd. we danced and boogied the night away. we drank some punch and snacked on cookies. mmmm. and of course our song for the night was "my heart will go on". we danced slowly as celine serenaded us and our living room was transformed to another place.

of course we had to pose in front of a silly photo backdrop and pose in the cliche prom fashion.

and to end the night, we were crowned prom king and queen. awwww. (i know, i know.)

we had a blast! it was so fun to do something silly and fun. to enjoy a seriously yummy dinner and just enjoy each other's company. i love that my husband is such a good sport. he happily went right along with all my crazy plans. he is the best! i was tempted to leave up the hanging hearts and all the pink, but after church today it all came down and now our living room feels boring. at least we know we can always dance!
